Mornington's Modern Music Hall

Directed by Judith Jackson

Orchestrations and musical direction by Patrick Williams

As part of the celebrations of Mornington Hall's centenary, we turned our venue into a cabaret club and curated a selection of songs from the 100 years from 1924 - 2024. The songs were chosen by our members to showcase musical genres across decades as well as reflect their own personal taste and indvidual expression. The programme included crowd pleasers, chart toppers and classics as well more quirky, niche and lesser known numbers. The cast took us on a journey from Gus Elen, Gershwin, Vera Lynn, Rogers & Hammerstein, Lulu and the Mamas & the Papas; through to Elvis, Abba, Madonna, Disney Evanescence, Amy Winehouse and Adele; with many more besides. Five sold-out shows and standing ovations at every performance was a wonderful way to round off our formal commemorations of this significant anniversary and mark 20 years of CADOS's custodianship of such an important place within our local community.

NODA review highlights

CADOS completed their Mornington Hall 100-year celebrations with a wonderful evening’s entertainment that showcased many of their talented members and shared the spotlight across the company. With a variety of songs from across the decades chosen by the performers themselves, there were some interesting insights into the favourites of the cast. Thirty-four songs from thirty-two performers gave us a packed evening with something for everyone, it was like stumbling upon a huge box of delicious chocolates.

Having a live band made this show what it was. The joy of hearing singers and musicians work together, supporting and helping each other, was a truly inspiring experience. The band were able to encourage the good singers into some wonderful performances and the able singers, to raise their games.

The hall looked at its best with a hazy jazz club feel. The raised stage for the musicians, the proscenium arch with red curtains and drapes, the red clothed tables with matching lights and table cards and the red roped stage edge all made for a transforming experience.

The lighting design was carefully planned, helping create the atmosphere and highlighting the performers with excellent operation..

The show was crafted together for a superb evening’s entertainment. The show ran smoothly with good interchanges that ensured the pace was maintained. The positioning of performers in the cabaret format gave nods to the music hall, jazz club, disco, and theatre as appropriate.

As a collective, everyone smiled and appeared to know every word to every song. This is a rare achievement and was much appreciated. Above all, the performers were obviously enjoying themselves and this helped the audience relax and relish the entertainment all the more.

The finale led into the bows where the audience was given their chance to show appreciation for a tremendous night’s entertainment. This was a space full of joy and fun and provided a wonderful ending to your year of celebration for a dear friend, Mornington Hall.
